Membrane flutter in three-dimensional inviscid flow

We develop a model and numerical method to study the large-amplitude flutter of rectangular membranes (of zero bending rigidity) that shed trailing vortex-sheet wake in three-dimensional (3-D) inviscid fluid flow. apply small initial perturbations track their decay or growth steady-state motions. For 12 combinations boundary conditions at membrane edges we compute stability thresholds subsequent dynamics across three-parameter space mass density, pretension stretching rigidity. With free side find good agreement with previous 2-D results used different discretization methods. 3-D cases naturally forms four groups based on leading edges. The deflection amplitudes oscillation frequencies have scalings similar those case. edges, although generally less important, may large qualitative effects – e.g. steady vs unsteady, periodic chaotic variety spanwise curvature distributions depending group physical parameter values.
